Ceiling fan installation

Summer is approaching like a great hot monster peeking over the back fence. The memories of sweaty nights in bed are all coming back like a rushing torrent and all you can think is "please not again, anything but that heat".

Well, lucky for you we have the answer. Roost Electrical installs all manner of ceiling fans every day, we could probably call ourselves professionals.

So, as the professionals we are i thought we could dane to share some of our hard won knowledge. In this page we will teach you the process of installing a fan, the costs involved and all the other little details that no one tells you.

Types of ceiling fans

Before we go over the installation process, it is worth noting the different types of ceiling fans and their accessories.

Types of fans

AC Ceiling fan- AC ceiling fans are generally the cheeper option. They range from as little as $100 to $300 in some cases. They are generally more harsh with their movements, make a constant humming noise and will usually have light globe holders instead of LED fittings.

DC Ceiling fan- DC ceiling fans are the gold standard and generally the more expensive option. They are silent, smooth moving and generally far more appealing to the eye.

Types of fan controls

Wall controlled- Most ceiling fans historically have been wall controlled until the invention of radio wave remote control packs. The main Exception of this rule being very old ceiling fans that have pull strings dangling from them that are used to turn them on or off. These kinds of controllers are a dial mounted on the wall that is spun to change the speed of the fan. Advantages- Reliable, rarely break and simple. Disadvantages- You have to get up to turn the fan on and off (first world problems, but can be annoying if your in bed and want the fan on or off).

Remote controlled- Starting to rise in popularity is the remote controller for it's ease of install and versatility. The remote control allows you to turn the fan and/or fan light, on and off from anywhere near by. Advantages- Can be simpler for installation than running new wires for a wall controller, can turn the fan off without getting up from the couch. Disadvantages- Will eventually need new batteries, some kinds of remotes can become unpaired from the fan causing it to seem as though the fan is broken, can get lost or broken and render the fan useless until a new remote is purchased.

Types of ceiling fan installation

Ceiling fan changeover fan to fan- Replacing an existing fan with a new fan is the easiest of all installs as long as the switching remains the same. This is because all of the wiring and structural timber is already in place. Generally this job should take no more than an hour and involves simply removing the old fan and replacing with a new one.

Ceiling fan Changeover light to fan- In a lot of cases, the place that you want a fan installed is replacing a light. In this case it can be easier than a full install if the switching is correct but harder than a changeover because of the lack of supporting timbers. For this to be an easier install the fan must be either remote controlled or a fan without a light. The light it is replacing must also be switched on by itself.

Ceiling fan install- This kind of install refers to a fan install that is not replacing any fittings and therefor a timber and cabling will need to be installed at a greater financial cost.

cost of ceiling fan installation

The cost of ceiling fan installation is as follows. (Some changes may occur due to change in circumstances or multiple fan installs)

Ceiling fan changeover- $150+GST

Ceiling fan Changeover light to fan- $150-$200+GST

Ceiling fan install- $180-$200+GST
